The volley is when you make contact before the ball bounces. Often the volley is executed at the kitchen line which gives you an advantage to place the ball in awkward positions for your opponent. The volley can be executed from the forehand side or backhand side, however the backhand will be more common given the biomechanics of the stroke.
Key Mechanics
- Contact in front of the body
- Extend the arm on high balls
- Lift the arm on low balls
- Keep the wrist flexed to allow the paddle to face forward at contact
Common Faults
- Starting the motion with a backward swing
- Making contact too close to the body
- Paddle not facing forward
- Losing eye contact on the “hit point”
